SUMMARY OF DEATH
Mahko Hoenigke was born at home in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, around January 14, 2022, with family friend Brigitte Meckes acting as an unlicensed midwife. Shortly after birth, the newborn showed signs of severe respiratory distress, described in text messages as struggling to breathe and 'turning blue.' Rather than calling 911 or seeking emergency medical care, his mother Amy Hoenigke and Meckes attempted unconventional treatments including a peppermint oil infuser and a makeshift breathing tube fashioned from a water bottle straw. The baby's father, Drew Hoenigke, left for work shortly after the birth. Amy Hoenigke later said she did not call for help because she feared authorities would discover their 'undocumented' 2-year-old daughter. The baby died on January 17, 2022, approximately three days after birth. The parents then waited three more days before contacting authorities. All three adults were charged; the parents pleaded guilty, and Meckes was convicted at trial and sentenced to over 8 years in prison.
