SUMMARY OF DEATH
On March 5, 2022, four-year-old Jaice Dupont was found unresponsive by his mother's boyfriend, Deangelo Hawkins, who was the sole caretaker at the time at their Wixom, Michigan apartment. Hawkins claimed the child fell while brushing his teeth, but medical examination revealed a posterior skull fracture and subdural hematoma from blunt force trauma to the head, inconsistent with the claimed mechanism. Additional old injuries were discovered, including 4-5 healing rib fractures and a humeral fracture. The child was transferred to Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he died on March 10, 2022, having never regained consciousness. Critically, five months prior in October 2021, Jaice had suffered a near-fatal perforated bowel and bruised liver from non-accidental trauma, which was investigated by CPS but closed with a finding of no abuse, due to multiple systemic failures including failure to identify Hawkins, delayed law enforcement notification, and misrepresentation of medical expert opinions. Hawkins was convicted of first-degree felony murder and first-degree child abuse, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
